Among many other media outlets, his work has appeared in The New York Times, Washington Post, Time, Newsweek, Newsday, Road&Track, Miami Herald, San Francisco Chronicle, and San Jose Mercury.
In past lives he was director of photography for the Augusta (Georgia) Chronicle and Herald and chief photographer for the Daily News of the Virgin Islands in Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas, USVI; and the last photo editor of The Richmond News Leader and subsequently associate photo director of the remaining Richmond newspaper.
Most recently, he was Senior Editor of Proceedings and Naval History magazines of the U.S. Naval Institute and an editor and writer for the U.S. Marine Corps, History Division, Quantico, Virginia. He currently writes and edits for the U.S. Navy at the Naval History and Heritage Command at the Washington Navy Yard. He was privileged to edit the official centenary history volumes of both Navy and Marine Corps aviation.
He is a contributing editor to Naval History and writes the magazine’s “Historic Ships” column. His illustrations have appeared in numerous books including Norman Polmar’s two-volume Aircraft Carriers and the Naval Institute Press’s Combat Fleets of the World. He is co-author with Nicholas J. Schlosser of Counterinsurgency Leadership in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Beyond, and has edited 18 other books.
His favorite subjects are aviation, naval history, and automobiles. Most of what you will see on these pages reflects those interests.
